DMG MORI machine monitoring

DMG MORI machine monitoring in Scout MES works via MTConnect or directly from the control. DMG MORI machines usually use Fanuc or Mitsubishi controls, so there are several ways to collect the process data.

DMG MORI with MAPPS II or newer (MTConnect)

DMG MORI machines with MAPPS II, MAPPS III, MAPPS IV or newer should support MTConnect, which Scout also supports. MTConnect data transmission is switched on in the MAPPS parameters. We install and configure the MTConnect agent and SCT remotely.

What data Scout reads via MTConnect

  • status
  • mode
  • program
  • part count
  • feed rate
  • feed override
  • alarms

Scout reads this data if the machine’s MTConnect agent publishes it.

Other data (e.g. spindle speed and override, spindle load, tool or variables) is determined during deployment.

Machines without MAPPS, or with direct access to the CNC control

For DMG MORI machines with a Fanuc or Siemens Sinumerik control, it is sometimes easier and faster to connect directly to the CNC control than to use MAPPS. The machine is then treated as a standard machine with a Fanuc, Siemens Sinumerik, Mitsubishi or other control, and the guide for that control applies.

Requirements: For MTConnect, the machine’s MTConnect agent must publish the data. For a direct connection, the requirements of the guide for that control apply.

How the connection works

Scout reads the data over your factory LAN, directly from the control, with no electrical modifications. The machine does not need internet access: SCT (Scout Configuration Tool) runs as Windows services on a computer in your network and sends the data to the Scout server over HTTPS, so you do not need to open any inbound ports. We install and configure SCT remotely. You prepare a Windows computer in the LAN and send us the list of machines (control type and IP address). Scout only reads data. It does not control machine motion.

Frequently asked questions

How does Scout connect to DMG MORI machines?

Via MTConnect (machines with MAPPS II or newer) or directly from the CNC control. Machines with a Fanuc, Siemens Sinumerik or Mitsubishi control can be connected like any other machine with that control.

What data does Scout read from DMG MORI machines?

Via MTConnect: status, mode, program, part count, feed rate, feed override and alarms, if the machine’s MTConnect agent publishes them. Other data is determined during deployment. With a direct connection, Scout reads the data described in the guide for that control.

Who sets up the connection?

We do, remotely. You prepare a Windows computer in your LAN and send us the list of machines; we install and configure SCT (and the MTConnect agent, if needed) and connect the machines. To add a machine later, you write to us and we change the configuration remotely.
